Seit 1985 Leiter der Arbeitsgruppe Geowissenschaftliche Fernerkundung (AGF, ehem. ZGF).

Entwicklung des Modularer Optoelektronischer Multispektral Stereo Scanner (MOMS) zusammen mit dem Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt. Unter der Leitung von Johann Bodechtel konnte der erste flugfähige Sensor MOMS-01 gleich zweimal (1983 und 1984) auf dem Space Shuttle Flügen STS-7 und STS-11 getestet werden. Es wurde ein weiterer Sensor MOMS-02 entwickelt. MOMS-02 wurde erfolgreich auf dem Space Shuttle Flug STS-55 (26. April - 6. Mai 1993) getestet. Danach wurde MOMS-02 auf der russischen Raumstation MIR als MOMS-2P installiert (5. Mai 1996). Durch MOMS-02 konnten erstmals räumlich hochauflösende multispektrale und panchromatische Stereodaten gleichzeitig aufgenommen werden. Dies ermöglichte eine Kombination von thematischen und topographischen Informationen der Landoberfläche.
